2008 Iolani Classic Girls Division Champion: Long Beach Poly

The Long Beach Poly Jack Rabbits, currently ranked No.2 by USA Today and ESPN, defeated the top-ranked Sacred Heart Fightin’ Irish (San Francisco) 51-36 in the finals of the 2008 Iolani Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii. The win by Poly snapped a 61-game winning streak by the Irish who had not lost since January 27, 2007.

Leading 20-12 after one quarter, the Jack Rabbits opened up a 10 point lead early in the second period and closed out the half up 25-21. The Irish tied the score at 25 early in the second half, but gave up 11 straight points to end the quarter down 42-29.

USC-bound forward Monique Oliver scored a game-high 16 points for the Jack Rabbits. Brittany Wilson and Thaddesia Southall added 10 points apiece for Poly. Sacred Heart was paced by Tierra Rogers and Ki-ki Moore who each scored 11 points.

Honolulu Advertiser: Nation’s No.1 edges Punahou

Iolani Classic PunahouPunahou girls basketball coach Mike Taylor wanted a chance to play the top teams in the country early in the season to see where his team stood.

If the Buffanblu’s performance last night against San Francisco’s Sacred Heart Cathedral, ranked No. 1 in the USA Today Girls’ Super 25, is any indication, his team is in fantastic shape.

Sacred Heart got everything it could handle and had to sweat out a couple of Punahou misses in the final seconds to pull out a 44-43 victory in the ‘Iolani Prep Girls Classic at ‘Iolani School.
